Mildred Ann Murphy Obituary

MILDRED ANN MURPHY, of Washington Court House, Ohio passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loving family and friends while wintering in Florida. Mildred would have turned 99 this July. She was an amazing Mother, Grandmother and friend to many. She will forever be remembered for her great sense of humor and her love of books and dogs. She always loved a good hand of cards. Her secret to living such a long and happy life? She would tell you: “I drink regular Pepsi everyday”.

Mildred was born to John S. and Mary Spalding Hite in Uniontown, Kentucky. She was the youngest of nine children. Mildred graduated from Saint Vincent Academy in St. Vincent, Kentucky. After graduation, she worked four years as a clerk/typist at Camp Breckinridge in Kentucky.

Mildred married John D. Murphy of Central City, Kentucky on June 14, 1947. They lived for four years in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They welcomed their first child, Joseph Patrick while living in Pennsylvania in 1948.

The young couple and their son Joe relocated to Washington Court House, Ohio in June 1952. Soon after, their second child, Judith Ann was born in 1952. Their family continued to grow as Michael Thomas was born in 1954 followed by John Spalding in 1962 and Patricia Ann in 1964.

Mildred was an active member of Saint Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church, including the choir and Rosary group. She also belonged to the Alpha CCL, The Red Hats, card club and the Fayette County Democratic club which her husband John was instrumental in establishing.

Mildred had many dear neighbors over the years as well as many great friends, including Mary Lorane Davis and Bonnie Kellenberger and one who was like another daughter, Cheri Fogle. She was an avid reader up until her eyes began to fail at age 92. She did not allow low vision to destroy her love for books, instead she transitioned to first listening to books on CD’s and then more recently listening through the library app on an iPhone with ear buds!

Mildred retired in 1999 as the Deputy Director of the Fayette County Board of Elections.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Murphy, her parents and 8 siblings: Annabel Mills (Joe), Ben Hite (Mary), Louise Cox (Harry), Sam T. Hite (Eudena), Johnny Hite (Gladys), Douglas Hite, Mary Margaret Hite and Jane Starnes (Mac), along with a grandson, Johnny Murphy and a long list of very dear friends including Marilyn Achor.

She is survived by her five children, Joe Murphy (Terri), Judy Sanders (Terry), Mike Murphy, John Murphy (Tina) and Patty Brickles (Larry). She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: J.P. Murphy

(Daniel), Maura Swain (Johnny), Terry Sanders (Brooke), Michelle Oney (Mitchell), Amanda Murphy, Lance Murphy, Nick Brickles and Emily Brickles (who she referred to as her “wife” and they shared matching rings). One great granddaughter, Sora Swain and two great- grandsons, Terence and Tyler Oney. 2 Nieces, Margaretann Youngins, Chris Reffitt, and 2 nephews Joe and Jack Starnes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at the St. Colman of Cloyne Catholic Church with Fr. C.M.
