Kenneth Eugene "Gene" Stillings

November 30, 1924 ~ August 20, 2018 (age 93)

KENNETH EUGENE “GENE” STILLINGS, age 93, of Washington CH, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 8:22 a.m. at his home. Gene’s health rapidly declined after the passing of his wife, Carolyn Jean Stillings.

He was born on November 30, 1924 in Milford Center, Ohio to Robert and Besse Sewell Stillings. Gene was part of, “The Greatest Generation.” He was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division. Gene made jumps into the Battle of Normandy on “D-Day,” and also into the Battle of the Bulge later that same year. He was an excellent marksman and was noted for his bravery. Sadly, he was responsible to oversee the burial in France, for his brother, Marvin Stillings, who was killed-in-action just a few miles away from him on January 16, 1945.

Gene returned home and worked for North American Transfer and retired from Armco Steel in 1984 after thirty years of service.

Gene was an avid hunter, gardener, and fisherman. He loved frying up a “mess” of turtle, frog-legs, or rabbit to feed his family and friends. He had a large garden and loved to share his cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes with everyone he knew.

Gene was probably best known for his love of sports. He played on numerous baseball teams and bowling leagues. Without fail, he could be found at every football, basketball, baseball game, and wrestling match that his two sons were involved in. He coached baseball and slow/fast pitch softball for over fifty years.

He was known by many as “Gene-O.” Gene was always a big tease; if he liked you, he would punch you in the arm and then call you a “big sissy” if you dared to flinch.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; siblings, Iola Ballinger, Janet Penwell, and Marvin Stillings; and the mother of his children, Ruby Jean Stillings.

Survivors include his children, Randy (Jeanette) Stillings of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Wayne (Nancy) Stillings of Washington CH; brother, Gerald (Crista) Stillings of Grove City; grandchildren, Randalyn (Bill) Hiltabidel, Lance (Jaime) Stillings, Tyler Stillings, and Brad Stillings; great-grandchildren, Lance (Chelsea) Stillings II, Elaine “Ellie May” Stillings, Ryan Yoak, Samuel Yoak, and Randy Yoak; step-grandchildren, Holley (Tim) Blouse, Isaac Robinson, and Jacob “Jakey” Robinson; step-great-grandchildren, Tommy Blouse, and Harrison Blouse; and sisters-in-law, Cathy Barr, and Pam Upperman. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Randy and Wayne would like to offer a very special thank you to Dean and Crystal Andrews. The Andrews family moved-in and helped care for him during the last few months of his life, which allowed him to be comfortable in his own home. The Andrews family truly loved Gene. The family would also like to extend a thank you to Ohio’s Hospice of Fayette County for the wonderful care they provided for Gene while also offering the family tremendous guidance during this difficult time.

The graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the Highlawn Cemetery with Danny Dodds officiating. In keeping with Gene’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of your choice in honor of Gene.
