Obituary

CHARLES M. LONG, age 88, of Washington CH, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 8:35 a.m. at his home. He was born on November 25, 1926 in Greenup County, Kentucky to Charles and Lillian Brown Long. He proudly served his country in the US Army as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict where he had made two jumps behind enemy lines. He retired in 1980 as a Sergeant from the Washington CH Police Department after 27 years of service. He was a life member of the VFW Post #4964, the American Legion Post #25 and also the Retired Police and Fireman Association. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved to watch his beagle hounds run rabbits. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary L. Brown Long, daughter Rita Pickens, step-son Carl Staffan, sisters June Long, Annabel Kowalski and Bonnie Kellum, brothers John Long and Lawson Long. Survivors include his grandchildren Charles (LeeAnn) Pickens, Tracy (Todd) Potts, Doug (Crystal) Pickens, Kristie (Josh) Smith and Krystal Pickens; great-grandchildren Tanner Mick, Zach and Kelsey Potts, Dakoda, Austin and Hannah Pickens, Nikkiah and Joshua Smith; sister Violet Brandenburg; brother Raymond Long as well as extended family Paula Farrell, Cody, Cameron and Danielle Farrell and special friend Helen Ingram. The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Summers Funeral Home with Danny Dodds officiating with burial to follow at the Spring Valley Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. A meal with family and friends will take place at the VFW Post on 335 Veterans Way immediately following the burial. Food can be delivered to that location any time after 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Fayette County, 222 N. Oakland Ave., Washington CH, OH 43160.
