JAMES ELSWORTH BUTCHER, age 80, of Washington Court House, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at St. Catherine's Manor of Washington CH. He was born on July 4, 1943 in Fayette County to the late Leo and Frances (Houser) Butcher. He married the former Theresa Lewis-Jackey, who preceded him in death on May 2, 2020.

James had attended school in Bloomingburg and had previously been self-employed as a painter. He was a member at The Gathering Place Church and enjoyed working puzzles of all kinds and socializing with his friends. James had a charitable heart and enjoyed giving back to his community.

Survivors include his children, Karri S. (Randal) Hickman and Marisa M. Keeland; grandchildren, Tracy and Zachary Hickman and Shelby Butcher-Boissevain all of Durant, OK; great grandchildren, Aiden and Gentry Waldroop; siblings, John E. (Judy) Butcher, Margaret Copley, Freddie L. (Pam) Butcher, Orville L. Butcher (Carol Workman), Mary F. (Kevin) Ellis, and Martha (Rob) Scott. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

In addition to his parents and his wife, James was preceded in death by his son, Bryan A. Butcher in 2014; grandson, Justin Waldroop in 2018; and brothers, Joseph E. Butcher in 2005, George E. Butcher in 2011, and Leonard L. Butcher in 2017.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. at The Gathering Place Church with Pastor John Pfeifer officiating. Family and friends may visit at the Church on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be held on Monday, November 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bloomingburg Cemetery.
