November 5, 1945 – January 21, 2025
JOEY ELDON PHILIPS, age 79, of Washington Court House, passed away at 11:25 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the Adena Fayette Medical Center. Born on November 5, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son the of the late John E. and Dorothy B. Ervin Philips. On June 16, 1967, he married the former Phyllis E. Shadley, she preceded him in death on August 27, 2020.
Joey attended school at Washington Senior High School and immediately went on to serve his country in the United States Army as a rifle Marksmen. After returning to Fayette County, Joey worked various jobs including driving a snow plow for the County Engineer's Office and working as an Electrician for his brother at Phillips Electric. Affectionately known throughout the community as "Uncle Joey", he was a "Father Figure" to many who knew him, and at one time served at the Commander for the local Ohio AMVETS Post 3571 in Washington C.H. He was also a member of American Legion Post 25, FOE Aerie 423 and the VFW Post 3762, all of Washington C.H.
Joey enjoyed the outdoors and liked to hunt and go fishing. However, one of his most favorite past times was being an "American Picker" and collecting all kinds of things that were interesting to him. One of his collections include over four hundred fishing poles that he has picked up from all over.
Survivors include his children, Sally Phillips, Suzie Johnson, Jodi Phillips, Mike Phillips and Cody Walters; his siblings, Judy Sanderson, Janie Jones and Judson 'Pee-Wee" (Ethel) Phillips. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joey was preceded in death by his son in 2000, John Phillips; his brothers, Jimmy, Jerry, Jon, Jay and Jessie Phillips; his sister, Jackie Tarbill and his sons in law, Sam Johnson and Bob Penwell.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2025, in the Summers Funeral Home with Mike Wolfe, of LifeConnect Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Fayette County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.
