LEO EARL MERRITT, JR., age 70, of Washington CH, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 11:06 a.m. at his home.
He was born on September 23, 1944 in Washington CH, to Leo Sr. and Medrith Strausbaugh Merritt. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam Era, and was stationed at a training station in Texas. Prior to his retirement, he was a skilled construction professional who shared his passion for craftsmanship and integrity with many, and left his mark on projects in several states. His hobbies included woodworking, word puzzles of all kinds, Ohio State football, and history. Most especially, he spent the final years of his life bringing joy to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless young people whose lives were made richer because of papaw's selfless love.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Gayle Merritt and Carl David Merritt and granddaughter Kendra Beekman.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Fluitt Merritt, and recently celebrated their
51st wedding anniversary this past week; his children Rick (Deann) Merritt, Kevin (Tammy) Merritt and Mindy (Doug) Beekman; grandchildren Tyler and Jacob McCarty, Riley, Reagan, Wesley, Melissa and Kevin Merritt, Joshua Beekman and
Kristen Scott; seven great-grandchildren; siblings Grace McKenzie, Sharon (David) May, Cathy McDaniels and Danny (Lydia) Merritt as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
