LEONA ALEXANDER TERRY, age 92, of Washington CH, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at the St. Catherine's Manor.
She was born on August 25, 1923, to the late John and Laura Alexander. She was the youngest of fourteen children. Leona was born and raised in Fayette County and was a 1941 graduate of Washington High School.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Arthur Joseph Terry Sr., two sons, Arthur Joseph Terry Jr. and Lawrence Michael Terry and thirteen brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her daughters, Jane Newsome and Brenda Latimore, four grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Leona accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior when she was nine years old. She faithfully served the Lord at the Second Baptist Church of Washington CH. She was proud of the fact that her parents were founding members of Second Baptist Church. During her years serving her church, Sister Terry as she was known to her church family, was a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Choir Director, Deaconess and Trustee. She served two terms as president of the Eastern Union Missionary Baptist Association Women's Auxiliary and was honored with Woman of the Year Award during her tenure.
Leona or Mrs. Terry as she was often called, was well known for her cooking skills throughout Fayette County. She managed the kitchen at the Washington Country Club for many years.
Leona loved playing the piano and singing at church. She also enjoyed sewing and being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leona was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She touched the lives of many people with her loving, caring, friendly Christian attitude. She will be missed by those who loved and knew her.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
