With an angel on each arm, Mary Lorane Boylan Davis, 95, of Washington Court House, passed away peacefully March 27, 2025, at Carriage Court Assisted Living.

Mary Lorane was born July 9, 1929, to William Alfred and Orvilla Maleta (Buddy) Kruse Boylan. She was the first of their 6 children which included Jack, Jeri, Michael, Lynne and Joe.

She met Gordon Eugene Davis in high school when he asked her to a school dance. They married in November 1947, shortly after her graduation from Washington High School, where she earned the distinction of class Valedictorian.

Mary Lorane is survived by sisters Jeri (Glenn Milstead, deceased) and Lynne (partner Ingrid Bernstein, deceased), Sandy Boylan, wife of Michael, and brother Joe (Shirley). She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon, siblings Jack and Michael, and beloved Aunt Lorane Kruse.

Her children and grandchildren include James (Sandy), children Anthony (Michelle) and Shelley (Brian Metz); Douglas (Linda), children Krista (Joel Steiner) and Kurt (Maren); Janet (Laury McIntyre); and Bill (Sam), child Courtney (Joe Klinker); and 12 great-grandchildren. Her caregiver, Sandy Brown, has become a much-loved family member and helped her greatly during the last several years of her life.

Other special friends include Margie Sollars, Mildred Murphy, Cindy Campbell Stout, Mary Belle Burris and Polly Conaway (deceased); and Craig Jaynes, TJ Haley, Debbie Roby, Carolyn Shoemaker, Steve Fenters, Clarabelle Jones Yelletts, and special nieces Jean Ann Davis and Carol Davis.

When Mary Lorane was nearly 40, and at the urging of her brother Michael, she began studying for her bachelor's degree while employed at the Carnegie Public Library. She completed her degree program at Ohio University summa cum laude and spent the next 25 years as Librarian at Washington Middle School. She also earned post-graduate credits through The Ohio State University. During her time at WMS, she was head of the teachers' union and made significant efforts on behalf of district teachers in renegotiating a new contract. She was also named Teacher of the Year by her peers prior to her retirement.

Reading and learning were her passions, and it was common for her to read three to four books per week. She was astute, straightforward, loving and beloved by her family and friends.

Not one to sit still for long, Mary Lorane was also an active member of the American Association of University Women, Fayette County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma education sorority, St Vincent de Paul, and Church Women United; and was a board member of Carnegie Public Library, Fayette County Historical Society. She also contributed to Second Chance.
