Obituary

MARY LEONE MATTHEWS, age 73, of Washington Court House, passed peacefully with her family by her side at 7:53 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at her home. She was born on March 2, 1951, in Fayette County.  She was the daughter of the late Lucas and Thelma Hatter Green. On June 25, 1983, she married her husband of more than forty-one years, Donald R. Matthews, who survives.

Mary was a 1969 graduate of Miami Trace High School. After graduating high school, Mary and her mother owned and operated T&M Cake Supplies on Jonesboro Road, where she ended up learning to decorate cakes. Mary worked at Fishers Big Wheel Store for more than twenty-five years until it closed. Mary then worked eighteen more years as a cook for the students and staff at Miami Trace Schools. She was a member of the South Side Church of Christ, where she enjoyed attending the Berean Sunday School class. Prior to attending South Side Church of Christ, Mary attended the First Christian Church, where she enjoyed volunteering her sewing skills to help fit costumes for the Easter Pageants, helped with the Kings Kids and Young Knights youth programs, and volunteered each year to help with the Vacation Bible School. Her faith and dedication to the Lord set the foundation for her daughters to build their own relationship with Christ. While Mary's daughters were in school, she was very active and involved in their activities such as softball, volleyball, band, choir, musicals, and 4-H. Mary taught both of her daughters how to sew and cook along with many other life skills. Mary was an active member of the Miami Trace Band Boosters for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, especially Canasta, sewing, cooking, gardening, crafting, and sitting on her front porch to enjoy the sunshine. Most of all, Mary enjoyed spending time with her loved ones and will be truly missed by all of them.

In addition to her loving husband, survivors include her daughters, Rebecca A. Matthews and Krystal D. Matthews of Washington C.H.; her siblings, James (Jim) Green also of Washington C.H.; her sister, Patricia (Glenn) Morrow of Bloomingburg along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Along with her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her brothers, Ronald Green, Robert (Bob) Green, Edward (Ed) Green, and her sister in-law, Linda Green.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the South Side Church of Christ with Steve Henderson officiating, burial to follow in the Washington Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Summers Funeral Home.
