IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Sue
Spengler
February 4, 1932 – June 5, 2024
MARY SUE SPENGLER, age 92, of Washington Court House, passed away at 10:44 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Court House Manor. She was born in Fayette County on February 4, 1932, to the late Sherman and Ruth Culberson Belles. On June 22, 1951, she married Wayne Spengler who preceded her in death in 1974.
Mary Sue was a 1950 graduate of Washington Senior High School. After her children were born, she furthered her education by attending Bowling Green State University, receiving her bachelor's degree in education in 1965. She went on to receive her master's degree in public administration from Miami University. For more than thirty years, Mary Sue worked for Miami Trace Local Schools, first as a teacher then as the principal at Madison Mills Elementary School. After retiring, she continued to work in education as a substitute teacher, and as a hostess at Bob Evans in Washington C.H.
Mary Sue was a member of the Crossroads Christian Church, the former First Christian Church, where she was involved in many of the church's activities, clubs and Sunday school classes, and served as treasurer for many years. She had been a church organist and pianist since the age of twelve. She also played for many area churches, including Grace United Methodist Church, playing their pipe organ. She and her husband were charter members of the Wilmington Church of Christ and McElroy Road Church of Christ in Mansfield.
She was active in many local clubs and organizations such as The Altrusa Club, The Fayette County Retired Teachers Association, Fayette County Choral Society, the Cecilian Music Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Business and Professional Women, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also enjoyed volunteering in the emergency room at Fayette County Memorial Hospital, and with the Recorder's Office helping them digitize old property records.
Some of Mary Sue's favorite past times included cross stitching, sewing and traveling. Her trips to Europe and visiting the Holy Lands were some of her favorite travel memories. She also enjoyed working in her big garden and fruit orchard on the farm. After her husband died, she was determined to "live her life" and continue raising her three teenagers. She will be remembered by her family as a strong woman of faith who believed in the power of prayer. She was a "spunky" woman who never let the grass grow under her feet.
Survivors include her children, Carol (Russ) Dilley of Washington C.H. and Bob (Denise) Spengler of Lewis Center; her grandchildren, Lori (Scott) Brill, Beth (Kyle) King, Amber (Josh) Cottrill, Katie (Justin) Gentry, Kristen (Kyle) Alvis and Ryan (Brooke) Spengler. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Lauralynne King, Gavin Cottrill, Isabelle and Luna Alvis, Lucy Spengler, Violet Gentry and one more great-grandchild on the way this summer.
In addition to her husband Wayne and her parents, Mary Sue was preceded in death by her daughter and son in-law, Linda and Jerry Bryan and her son, John Mark, who passed at infancy.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024, at Crossroads Christian Church at 175 Halliday Drive, in Washington Court House with Pastor Steve Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in the Bloomingburg Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Sunday, June 9 from 3:00-6:00 p.m.
