Obituary

RICHARD LEE "DICK" HUGHES, age 86, of Washington Court House, passed away at 12:45 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2024 at his home. Born on August 22, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Mildred Garringer Hughes. On August 10, 1956 he married his loving wife of sixty-eight years, the former Lavina R. Pinson, who survives.

Richard was a 1955 graduate of Greeneview High School in Jamestown, where he played both baseball and basketball and, met his high school sweetheart and wife. He farmed for more than forty-seven years in the Jamestown and Jeffersonville areas. Richard loved all things sports, especially his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds. He was a volunteer coach in both Little League Baseball and Jr. High Basketball. Richard also enjoyed playing shuffleboard, making crafts and woodworking. He was known for carving beautiful clocks out of wood and OSU Buckeye necklaces. Previously, Richard served eight years as a 4-H Advisor for the Ambitious Farmers 4-H club and was Head Elder at the Pleasant View Church of Christ in Jeffersonville. He and his wife, Lavina had both previously attended church at South Side Church of Christ in Washington C.H. as well. Richard was a very loving father and grandfather and great-grandfather; he never missed his kids and grandkids 'events at school and enjoyed watching them play sports and perform.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his special caregivers, Jodi, and Victoria, for the extra care they provided for Richard and his family during his illness. Also, thank you to National Church Residence Home Health Care and Hospice Care for their wonderful care.

In addition to his loving wife, Richard is survived by his children, Connie Hughes (Chris) Jeffries, Sandy Hughes (Pat) Hurley and Jeff (Candy Tiger) Hughes; his grandchildren, Nick and Renee Spears, Erin (Spears) and Kevin Peelle, Jenna (Spears) and Nate Chaney, Amber and Scott Kurowski, Chelsey and Joey Stone, Crystal and Nick Pitakos, Tucker and Hannah Hughes, Kylie Jo (Hughes) and Chase Enochs and Laikyn Hughes. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Cayla Gayheart, Barrett Peelle, Knox Chaney, Maggie Peelle, Cameron Spears, Case Chaney, Connor Spears, Brynley Grace Stone, Elsie Enochs and Emmett Enochs; his siblings, Max (Brenda) Hughes; his Aunt Janet Murrell along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Along with his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his father and mother in-law Kenneth and Opal Pinson, brother Neil Hughes.

In keeping with Richard's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the Pleasant View Church of Christ with Danny Dodds and Doug McCoy officiating. Burial will be held by the family at a later date in the Silver Creek Cemetery, Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in Richard's name be made to: Pleasant View Church of Christ, 6906 Upper Jamestown Rd., Jeffersonville, Ohio 43128.

Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. The family is requesting that everyone feel free to wear their Ohio State Buckeye and Cincinnati Reds gear.
