Obituary

RICHARD ALLEN WALLACE, age 92, of Long Beach, California passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014 in Washington CH, Ohio where he had been a patient at St. Catherine's Manor. He was born on February 10, 1921 in Rarden, Ohio to Clara Edith Moon Wallace and George Samuel Wallace. Richard joined the US Navy on October 15, 1940. He was assigned to the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor. Richard participated in the Aleutian Islands Campaign and the invasion of the Marshall and Gilbert Islands while a crew member of the USS Pennsylvania. During the Korean Conflict, he was assigned duty on the evacuation of Wanson, Hungham and the invasion of Inchon. He was awarded the Asiatic Medal with 3-stars, American Area Medal, American Defense Medal with 1-star, Good Conduct Medal, World Commendation, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Medal and a Commanding Officer's Letter of Commendation. After his service to his country, he worked for North American Rockwell in Columbus, Ohio. After a few years he transferred to Rockwell International Space Transportation Division in Downey, California where he tested metals for heat resistance for the Space Shuttles Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and the Endeavor. He retired in 1994. Richard enjoyed riding his bike and in 1990, at the age of 69, he rode in the Whittier Hills Bike Challenge and compelted the 80 mile course. In 1992 he rode in the Rosarito Ensenada Bike Marathon and completed the 50 mile course. Hw was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marian D. Wise Haines. Survivors include his sister, Shirley R. Clark Nutter, nieces Delores "Joey" Wise Belles, Linda Clark Wharton, Ramona Clark Mercina, Tanya Wise Helms, nephews James L. Wise Jr., Michael Wallace Clark and Scott Edward Clark as well as many great-nieces and nephews. "Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Summers Funeral Home with Danny Dodds officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at the Good Hope Cemetery.
