ROBERT E. "BOB" SELF, age 83, of Washington CH, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 4:00 a.m. at his home with loved ones by his side. He had been in failing health for the past several months.
He was born on March 10, 1930 in Fayette County to Perl Sr. and Bertha Wood Self. He was older teenager when he became a Christian at the House of Prayer. Along with a group of other youth, they visited the Gregg Street CCCU revival meeting with Don Humble and there he met Dorothy Gilmore, who later became his wife and the love of his life. They later married and raised their family in the church where he was active in many offices, boards and served as a bus driver.
Bob was a hard worker. He worked at NCR until their closing then later worked at the Good Hope Cemetery for five years and retired from the Fayette County Court House after ten years of service. He also had owned and operated a floor cleaning service and worked throughout the community in many local businesses.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sons Samuel Jay and Robert Ray Self, brothers Perl Jr., Ed and Dan, sisters Thelma, JoAnn, Shirley, Mae and Dixie and in-laws Clinton and Helen Gilmore.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gilmore Self, whom he married on September 24, 1948 and was a loving father to his children Stephen (Debbie) Self and Claudia (Barry) Hidy. He and his wife helped to raise a niece Loretta and her sons Patrick and J.D. plus other family members off and on. Also surviving are his grandchildren Jason (Amy) Self, Joshua (Alana) Self, Brandon (April) Self, Shane (Shellie) Self, Samantha (Rick) Garrison, Lacey (Brock) West, Brett (Paige) Hidy; step-grandson Justin (Sarah) Hidy; 9 great-grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Cindy Self; sisters Connie Enochs and Judy (Ron) Knisley; brother-in-law Clinton (Rhoda) Gilmore; sister-in-law Ruth Self as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends including a special nephew, Larry (Jana) Self.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at the Judy Chapel in the Washington Cemetery with Rev. Jim Pollard officiating. Burial will follow. Friends may call at the Judy Chapel from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
