IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roberta "June"
Milstead
September 1, 1925 – May 21, 2024
ROBERTA "JUNE" MILSTEAD, 98, of Washington Court House, passed away on May 21, 2024 after a brief illness at St. Catherine's Manor of Washington Court House.
June was born on September 1, 1925 to Florence and David Schwartz at their family home in Pike County, Ohio. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings – Carl, Art, Bob, and John Schwartz, Hazel Hurles, Ruby Woods, Jo West, Mary Butler, and Ruth Bastian. June was a graduate of Waverly High School.
June was a milk tester at Cudahay Dairy in Washington Court House during the 40's and 50's until she married the late Charles Milstead in 1961. Her focus then turned to raising children. She was an extraordinary mother and grandma who always put her needs behind those of her family. When her kids were in high school, June went back to working outside the home. She worked a few years at the Pennington Bread thrift store before taking a job as a cafeteria worker at Rose Avenue Elementary in the Washington City School District. She loved that job and continued to work there until the school closed in 2008. At that point, she was battling with the loss of some of her eyesight so rather than transition to a new school building, she decided to retire at the age of 83.
But June's most important work in life didn't draw a paycheck. She was well-known for putting her faith in God into action. She was an active member of the Southside Church of Christ. She organized the attendance cards for decades, making sure visitors were welcomed and prayer requests were quickly addressed. In addition, she started a greeting card ministry of her own, sending thousands of cards to people who were ill or who she felt just needed to know she was thinking about them. Many people have received birthday cards from June, reminding them to check their driver's license to make sure it hadn't expired on their special day. June was also known for her legendary pies, many of which were delivered to people as a pick-me-up when they needed some sweetness to get through a sour spot in their lives. Throughout her life, she volunteered with a variety of local organizations that help low-income people, senior citizens and veterans. She treasured the right to vote and regularly served as a poll worker for decades. In 2012, she was honored as the Fayette County Citizen of the Year for her lifelong work impacting the lives of others. Despite being nearly blind and hard of hearing in her final years of her life, she never lost her positive attitude toward life and infectious sense of humor. She loved music and sang every day.
June leaves behind her daughter, Jo Ingles, and her husband, Roger Ingles, of Powell, Ohio and her son, Dennis Milstead, and his wife, Rebekah Milstead, of Washington Court House. She is also survived by four grandchildren – Sarah Ingles of Columbus, Ohio, Brad Ingles of Denver, Colorado, and Wesley and Charley Milstead of Washington Court House. She also leaves behind many dear friends who she considered to be part of her family.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024 in the South Side Church of Christ with Danny Dodds officiating, burial to follow in the Washington Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Friday, the evening before the service from 5-7:00 p.m.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of St. Catherine's Manor who went out of their way to lovingly help care for June during her last months of life.
