Shortly after being born, his family moved to Gallipolis, then to Ironton and later to Rio Grande where he worked on a farm as young teen. Another move brought him to Washington C.H. where he worked at Herb's Drive-In, family owned and operated.
Bill was a 1950 graduate of Washington Senior High School, after graduation he proudly served in the United States Air Force. He worked on the B-29 Superfortress during the Korean War, both Okinawa and Japan. After returning home, Bill began his career at Armco Steel (Steelox Systems) until his retirement in 1997 after dedicating thirty-eight years of service to the company. After his retirement, Bill enjoyed helping on the Melvin Farm in Bloomingburg during both planting and harvesting seasons.
Bill attended Grace Community Church, he took joy in planning and working projects of his own, but found much greater joy helping others with projects, when needed. He also enjoyed taking special care to his beloved K-9 companion, "Mr. Melvin."
Survivors include his daughters, Nancy (David) Randall of Clarksville, Sara (Mike) Endsley of Marysville and Debra (Fred) Melvin of Bloomingburg. He also leaves behind his three cherished grandsons, Benson Melvin and his fiancé, Jennifer Velten of Columbus, Clark (Kelsey) Melvin of Waterville, and Henry Melvin of Clermont, FL. Also surviving is his sister, JoAnn Hays of Oak Hill, his brother, Richard Benson of Layton, UT along with several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
