Donald Ray Payton

DONALD RAY PAYTON, age 71, of Wilmington, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Clinton Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on November 20, 1952 in Fayette County to the late Kenneth and Connie (Redman) Payton Berwanger. He was a 1972 graduate of Miami Trace High School. Donald proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and departed with an honorable discharge. Donald was employed at R&L Carriers where he worked as a truck driver until his health would no longer allow. He enjoyed tinkering with old cars, watching car shows and old westerns, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his son, Dion Jon Furguson; sisters-in-law, Donna Payton, and Karen Capehart; and brother-in-law, Rick Hunt.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Beverly Jean (Burnell) Payton, whom he married on November 17, 2020; his daughter, Heather (Darrell) Arrington; grandchildren, Rickie Smith, Kayla Furguson, and Michael (Michelle) Furguson; siblings, Tom (Vickie) Payton, Kenny Payton, Vicki Hunt, Rosemary Cottrell, Randy Payton, and Gary Payton; step-brother, Jerry Crawford; daughter-in-law, Varina Furguson; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Petersen. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at the Summers Funeral Home from 5-7:00 p.m.
