LEE EDWARD SHOEMAKER, age 81, of Good Hope, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 8:12 p.m. at the Signature Health Care surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on September 9, 1935 in Adams County to Charley and Harriett “Hattie” Thomas Shoemaker. He was a 1953 graduate of Hillsboro High School. He proudly served his country in the US Army where he transported rockets. Lee, and his wife, Shirley, were the owners/operators of Skyscraper Restaurant for many years. He was a harness horse trainer for over 45 years. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Temple, a past member of the National Rifle Association, and the Harness Horseman Association where he received Horseman of the Year of Fayette County. Lee enjoyed deer hunting, squirrel hunting, fishing, tinkering in taxidermy but most of all loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, brother Armanis Shoemaker, sisters, Louise Moberly and Martha Jane Watson.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Sollars Shoemaker, whom he married on March 22, 1980; his children, Jeff Underwood, Jodi (Bruce) Klontz, Tai Lea Shoemaker, and Edward (Debbie) Ward; grandchildren, Caeleb Reisinger, Heath Klontz, and Makaila “Sassy” (Zack) Bennett; great-grandchildren, Keira Klontz, Kyleigh Klontz, Krosbi Kyle Liam Bennett, Dylan Fouch, Megan Fouch, Nicholas Smith; siblings, Milton (Gussie) Shoemaker, Juanita Rhoads; niece and nephew, Mindy (Mike) Callahan, and Michael Templin, along with many other nieces, nephews and cousins; sister-in-law’s, Susan Templin, Patsy (Jim) Free, Peggy (David) Bach; special friends, John and Phyllis Hill, Steve and Connie Moore and sons, Donnie Curtain, Gerald and Hilda Downs, Michael and Angie Reisinger; The boys of The Fayette County Horse Barns: Sandy Beatty, Lee Michael, Dusty Joseph, Robert Allen Haynes, The Allis Boys and Noel Boys, as well as his extended church family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bible Baptist Temple with Pastor Andrew Johnson and Dr. Lyn Jackson officiating. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
