M. STEPHEN “STEVE” MITCHEM, age 74, of South Solon, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2022 at 2:55 a.m. at his home while surrounded by his family.
He was born on August 8, 1947 in Tazewell County, Virginia to the late John P. and Nancy E. “Libby” (Smith) Mitchem.
He was a 1966 graduate of Madison South High School. He was a competitive all-around athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. Steve loved golfing and enjoyed his time playing golf with friends on the Farmer’s Golf League.
Steve was a loving and devoted husband, dad, papa and friend. He was a kindhearted soul that would do anything for anybody. He was truly one of the good ones.
Steve wore many hats throughout his life working for the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Pickaway Correctional Institution, being a 4-H advisor and being a lifelong farmer. Steve enjoyed doing woodworking projects in his spare time making numerous items of furniture around the house. Steve instilled and passed along his love for hogs to Kelly and Gus, helping to build the foundation for Mitchem Showpigs.
Survivors include the love of his life, Nancy J. (Thomas) Mitchem, whom he married on July 11, 1998; his children, Kelly J. Morgan and Joseph (Kim) Mitchem; grandson, Gus L. Mitchem who made his home with his grandparents; grandchildren, Derek and Mallory Mitchem; and siblings, John (Virginia) Mitchem, Debbie (Tom) Montesanti, Nancy Wood, David (Emily) Mitchem, and Brian (Lisa) Mitchem. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of dear and special friends.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Summers Funeral Home with Mell Wickensimer officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ohio Pork Council/OH-PIGS Circuit, 9798 Karmar Ct., Suite A, New Albany, OH 43054, to help support Steve’s love of pigs and helping the youth.
