NANCY LOU ATKINSON, age 86, of Washington CH, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 4:33 p.m. at Fayette County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on September 22, 1934 in Montgomery County to Charles and Marie (Timmerman) Buckel. She was a 1953 graduate of Wilbur Wright High School. Nancy and her husband, Bud first opened Atkinson’s Bakery in Dayton in 1959. The two continued operating their well-known bakery when they moved to Washington CH in 1977. Nancy always loved working at the bakery and visiting with her faithful customers. She had attended the South Side Church of Christ until her health would not allow. Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She enjoyed vacationing with her daughter, attending activities at Court House Manor, coloring, drawing, and being with her family.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Steve Gillenwater; and siblings, Marie (Leroy) Arnett, Charles Buckel, Jack Buckel, and JoeAnn Myers.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Martin “Bud” Atkinson, whom she married on August 10, 1956; her children, Harry Jr. (Regina) Atkinson, Charlie (Betty) Atkinson, Patty Atkinson, Lloyd (Renee) Atkinson, and Frank (Shea) Atkinson; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert Buckel of Florida. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of dear and special friends.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 11, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the Summers Funeral Home with Danny Dodds officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. In keeping with her wishes, cremation will take place and burial will be held at the Highlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Those in attendance must wear a mask or other facial covering and are asked to adhere to social-distancing guidelines.
